Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Michael Ransburg, Multimedia Communication research group, Klagenfurt University.

I received my M.Sc. (Dipl.-Ing.) from the Klagenfurt University in November 2003 for my master’s thesis on MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation and my Dr. tech. in July 2008 for my PhD thesis on “Codec-agnostic Dynamic and Distributed Adaptation of Scalable Multimedia Content”.

Initially, I joined the Klagenfurt University in January 2004 to work as a Research Assistant in the Multimedia Communication research group of the Department of Information Technology (ITEC) in the scope of the DANAE EU IST project. In 2006 I completed my work on DANAE in which I was responsible for the “Distributed Adaptation Framework” task. The project received the highest EC rating (“good to excellent project”). Consequently I continued my work in the scope of the ENTHRONE 2 EU IST project. Since September 2008 I have been working at the Klagenfurt University as a Postdoctoral Researcher where I coordinate the local team in the SCALNET and SCALIPTV CELTIC/FFG projects. These projects focus on novel approaches to multimedia transmission and adaptation. In addition to the aforementioned tasks, I work as a lecturer at Klagenfurt University and teach various computer science classes.

I participated in the work of ISO/MPEG as an editor of four international standards in the scope of MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation and the ISO Base Media File Format. In addition to my professional services as a referee for multiple journals and conferences, I am currently organizing a workshop on Impact of Scalable Video Coding on Multimedia Provisioning (SVCVision) which will take place during the MobiMedia conference in September 2010. Besides demonstrations and talks, I have currently published more than 20 papers, including one journal paper, three book chapters and one book.

My complete curriculum vitae, including publications and MPEG contributions can be found here.

When I’m not dedicating my time to my professional activities, I enjoy sports (in particular bouldering and running), traveling and photography. You can view my photos on the Photography page or organized by visited countries on the Travels page.
